Some of the animals we keep as pets - dogs and cats for example - are often seen as long-term 'members of the family' yet insects, reptiles, amphibians and fish can be equally enjoyed as fascinating creatures to watch, feed and look after. Smaller mammals and birds all need daily care and perhaps the responsibility for providing the needs of living creatures in our lives is what so many people find rewarding about keeping a pet.
